Hi, my Nikon coolpix p90 will not switch on. I fully charged the battery overnight and replaced it normally, now camera is completely dead. For a few months prior the focus has been badly blurred on some shots. Camera has been week looked after but we live in a very dry and dusty environment.

Hi,

Thank you for choosing JustAnswer.

I am sorry to hear that your camera is giving you trouble.

Before I answer, could you please answer few questions?

1. Does the camera make any noise(like it's trying to turn on) when you turn it on?

2. Have you tried with a brand new original Nikon batery?

3. How did you clean the battery connections?

Regards,

Pramit

No, there is no noise, completely dead. Cleaned connections with dry clean cloth.
I haven't bought a new battery to try yet. I'm in central turkey with no camera shops.

Before you buy a new battery, try the following steps.

Clean every gap you see with canned/compressed air.

Clean the battery contacts(also the contact points inside the camera) with a q-tip dipped in alcohol.

Take the memory card out and insert the charged battery.

Let me know how it goes. If it won't work, we'll try something else.

Fingers crossed, buddy!

No, that didn't work.

These are very good cameras. May I know how old is yours?

Also, please try the steps below.

1. Remove the main battery.
2. Turn the ON/OFF switch to ON allow the camera to sit idle for 10 minutes. Then turn it OFF.
4. Clean the battery contacts with alcohol and q-tip and get some sandpaper and rub the contacts on the battery. Clean the battery compartment with alcohol and q-tip. make sure there are no bent pins or any dust particle.
5. Insert the charged battery. DO NOT insert the memory card. Turn the camera ON.

Let me know if it helps.

If it doesn't then the problem is internal and probably any of the circuit board will require replacement. Before I can confirm that I want to rule out all other possibilities before I can recommend you a repair.

Let me know if it helps.

It's about 4 years old and I've never replaced the battery. I will try what you suggest and get back to you.
Sure, I hope it will be fixed. Keep me posted.
