ElectronicsPete : Hello, I am Pete, and I'll be happy to assist with your question today.
ElectronicsPete : If your camera displays 'card reader error' for a known good card, then the most likely explanation is that the card is not making good contact with the camera.
ElectronicsPete : Try wiping the gold contacts on the card with a soft cloth or pencil eraser, then try again.
ElectronicsPete : If you are still having problems, then the card reader contacts inside the camera will need to be cleaned.
ElectronicsPete : Sometimes, inserting and removing a card several times can be enough to allow it to make good contact with the card reader again.
ElectronicsPete : If this does not work, then the camera will need to be opened to gain access to the card reader to clean it.
ElectronicsPete : If you have some technical experience you could attempt this yourself; alternatively, a local camera or electronics repair shop can do this for you for a small fee.

Any pointers on how to gain access to the reader? How does this model open to reach the contacts better? what do I clean them with?

The camera will need to be disassembled to reach the card reader. There are two screws on the rear of the camera which will need to be removed, and more inside the battery chamber. The rear plastic cover is held in place by numerous plastic clips and will need to be carefully prised off.

As with the memory card, you can clean the card reader contacts with a soft cloth or pencil eraser.
