sound wont record on sony hdr ux 20 camcorder. boom mic is set to on.
Hello, my name is Rusty. I am a sound engineer. What type of mic are you using?
Just the internal stock mic.
Ok, you mentioned Boom mic, so I thought you were using an external mic, plugged into your external mic jack.Where is boom mic set to "on"? Have you had an external mic plugged in recently?
Never had an external mic. Internal boom has always been on. It just stopped working.
Ok, that's not good. There is a connection from the mic to the circuit board that has come loose. Are you able to open the camera and fix that yourself, or would you rather me to tell you where to take it for repair? It will cost about $50.
Where can I take it to be fixed?
Btw, there is no external mic jack on this camera.
I was wondering why I couldn't find anything on the external mic... The boom mic threw me off, because that is generally referred to as an external mic.Tell me your zip code so I can find someone close to you. The damage is nothing serious.
20011. Yeah, Sony makes this piece of crap boom mic that attaches to the active shoe.
Aah yes, the shoe mic. I didn't realize that it was referred to as a boom mic.Check the shoe, make sure there is nothing stuck in it that would make the camera believe that there is an external mic attached. If you can set the boom mic to off, do that. It may be looking for a mic that is not attached, and it shuts off the internal mic. It will not record both at the same time.If you still have trouble, this is your nearest authorized repair facility. Camera is off warranty so not worth shipping. Should I just take it to alocal shop or should I figure out how to do this on my own? Thanks!
I don't recommend you take it apart, you may not be able to get it back together. There are parts that fall out. However, if you take it to a camera shop, I suspect the ribbon has come loose from the board from the mic. It's less than a $50 repair. Repair shops do work on Sony cameras.
