Customer Question

I just purchased a Canon PowerShot SX30 IS and have been unable to format a memory card. I have tried 3 different cards (all SanDisk SDHC cards), and all I get is a 'memory card error.' I have tried to follow the User Guide instructions for a low level format, but the Format option in the Menu is always grayed out, and I cannot select it.

Optional Information:
Make: Canon
Model: Powershot SX30 IS

Already Tried:
I have tried to format 3 different (SanDisk SDHC) memory cards. The Format function in the Menu is always grayed out.

Hi,

Welcome to Just Answer.com,

Could you please tell me the memory card capacity that you are using.(For eg 2GB, 4GB, 8GB etc).

Regards,

Shinod

Two of the cards I tried were 8 gb and one was 2 gb.

Hi,

Ok.

These cards are compatible with the camera.

Please check whether the card lock switch is in lock position. If it is in lock position, just unlock it.

Click here to see the image of the SDHC card lock switch.

Let me know the results please.

Regards,

Shinod

I have checked the lock status of the cards. They are not locked, and the Canon manual claims that a locked card yields a different error message ("memory card locked").

Ok.

These are the two checks what we have to do in such an eventuality.

Also since you have already tried with three different cards, there is no possibility that all cards are faulty.

Unfortunately, in such a case the camera has to be suspected. The only option is to send the camera for repair to an authorized agent.

That's the suggestion available in the manual as well.

Regards,

Shinod
