Customer Question

Hi there
I'm hoping you can advise me. I have a little Jack russel bitch, 13 month old, she eats very little and always takes her time with her food. However we have recently (4 weeks ago) gotten a bulldog puppy. The Jack russel went through a phase of wolfing her food down them seeking more, this has now settled since she has established she is the boss. So about 2 weeks ago she started having loose stools and for 2 days she had blood in her poo. I did contact the vet who advised to see how she went over the weekend. This cleared within 3 days. However I have noticed the past couple of days she is kind of coughing not very often (about 1/2 times a day), but as if there is something stuck in her throat! I would be truly grateful for advice kind regards

I suspect that your puppy is responsible for your JR's cough. Contracted from where the pup came from, infectious tracheobronchitis ("kennel cough") has an incubation period of 3-10 days. Recovered pups remain carriers and infective for an indefinite but often protracted length of time; hence, your JR's current symptoms. The good news is that most adult dogs such as she remiss unaided within 1-3 weeks. I rarely treat these dogs with antibiotics for that reason. Severely affected dogs who are coughing to the point of adversely affecting their quality of life can be prescribed a narcotic antitussive (anti-cough) drug.

Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

Would that explain the loose stools and blood too. She's still active and playing ect, but I do feel she looks unwell and is a little low in mood. Should I give another week then if still showing some signs take her to local vet, thankyou

No, I can't attribute her diarrhea and hematochezia (blood in the stool) to a respiratory agent. Such signs are usually parasite-related at her age - the nematodes roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and the protozoan Giardia are important considerations. Yes, as long as she's stable "watchful waiting" for another week is reasonable. Please continue our conversation if you wish.
