MY MALE ALEXANDRINE IS ABOUT 10 YRS OLD---PET. ABOUT 2 YRS

Customer Question

MY MALE ALEXANDRINE IS ABOUT 10 YRS OLD---PET. ABOUT 2 YRS AGO HIS FEATHERS JUST FWLL OUT OVER NITE--NOT PICKING. GOT RIGHT DOWN TO HIS FUZZY GRAY DOWN. HEAD FEATHERS FINE, AS MOST WING FEATHERS. CAME PARCIALLY BACK IN AND FELL OUT AGAIN AND THEN CAME IN AND STAYED. THEN AFTER A FEW MONTHS SAME SENARIO. THIS KEEPING HAPPENING EVERY SO OFTEN. HIS IS NOT REAL STEADY ON HIS MOVEMENTS EITHER. I HAD DR. SCOTT MCDONALD/AVIAN VET WELL KNOWN LOOK AT HIM AND HE DIDNT HAVE AN ANSWER EXCEPT HE DOESNT HAVE BEAK AND FEATHER DISEASE. I HAVE LOTS OF BIRDS PLUS HAND FEED FOR AN AVIARY, AND FEED MY FLOCK WELL----BASICALLY THE SEED THEY GET IS A WIDE VARIETY OF HIGGINS BRAND---NOT CHEAP STUFF.
IS HE SHORT ON SOMETHING??? HE LOOKS AWFUL RIGHT NOW. DONNA IOWA.

Aloha! You're speaking with Dr. Michael Salkin
I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. We don't have a lot of avian-oriented vets on the site. Your Alexandrine may simply be exhibiting a protracted mold rather than a normally progressive one that leaves enough feathers to give birds a normal appearance. This isn't likely, however, because you've reported that the new feathers are also lost shortly after they emerge.
In these cases, we need to rule out not only beak and feather disease caused by a circovirus but also polyomavirus, a bacterial folliculitis, and yeast infections. Please discuss having a feather follicle biopsy and culture performed with Dr. McDonald.
Please tell me what his diet has consisted of. Even the best of seed mixtures are likely to leave our birds nutritionally imbalanced. Seed could constitute no more than 20% of our birds' diet.
