I think my Chihuahua-pom mix (weighs 9 lbs) may have eaten

This answer was rated:

I think my Chihuahua-pom mix (weighs 9 lbs) may have eaten a sleeping pill. Over the counter equate nighttime sleep aid 50 mg. I gave him hydrogen-peroxide and he threw up 3 times. I looked thru and could not find a pill. Appears alert. What can I do now ?

DrBruce :

Hello, this is Dr. Bruce and I would like to help you with Cocoa.

DrBruce :

I have very good news for you. The product you mentioned is just a higher dose of diphenhydramine, which is the generic version of benadryl.

Customer:

What does that mean ?

DrBruce :

Benadryl is very safe for dogs. The dose range is generally from 1-4 mg per pound, but can go up to 7-8 mg per pound and still be safe. Cocoa is within the safe range, so even if he absorbed the entire pill, it is very unlikely to cause any problems.

Customer:

He is sleepy now, is it ok to let him sleep or should I try to keep awake?

DrBruce :

When did he eat the pill?

Customer:

approx. 45 mins ago

DrBruce :

I would suspect that he absorbed very little of the pill, even if you didn't find it in the vomit. I would not be worried and it should be fine to let him sleep.

Customer:

Thank you so much for helping with this, I feel much better with your answers !!

DrBruce :

You're quite welcome! I'm glad that I could help.
