My three month old puppy just got her DHLPP 2nd of three booster

Customer Question

My three month old puppy just got her DHLPP 2nd of three booster shot and 2nd lyme vaccine today. In a couple of hours she started yelping about the soreness in the top hip area where the shots were given. Does she need to see a vet tonight? I'm not sure of how concerned we shoud be about this.

Welcome to JustAnswer! I am a licensed veterinarian and specialist and will do my best to assist you today!

While history alone can not rule-out other causes, your description is consistent with a vaccine reaction.

This is not a serious anaphylactic reaction, which is good. A serious anaphylactic reaction (think of a person that gets stung by a bee and can not breathe).....That would have been a reaction seen within minutes of the vaccine.

This is a common delayed, mild reaction.

Mild forms of a vaccine reaction can include:
- Itching
- Redness on the skin
- Hives
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Pain or small lump at the injection site.

If the signs continue, often in these cases we consider treatments such as:

- Steroids (Prednisone - LINK HERE)

and/or

- Antihistamines such as Benadryl (LINK HERE).

Many consider the use of an antihistamine first - such as Benadryl. If this does not help after a few doses, or if you notice worsening of the signs reported above, the veterinarian not only evaluates for other possible causes, but then (if not started already), considers the use of a steroid such as Prednisone.

But the botXXXXX XXXXXne is that this is rarely serious and most often resolves in 2-3 days at most.

I hope this helps! Please REPLY if more information is needed.

So do you think I need to give a benadryl tonight? She is very lethargic and went to sleep. She is only 8lbs. Do I give her regular benadryl at what dose if your answer is yes.

If there is just mild discomfort at the site but no other signs such as redness, itching, or hives - benadryl is not needed and this will resolve without worry in 2-3 days at most.

I hope this helps! Please REPLY if more information is needed.
