Hi my Cat who was a stray around april came in to our lives pregnant (we didn't know how long she had left) and she needed attention and food, we estamated her to be about 6 to 7 months old and she delevered 4 kittens June 20th, perfect quiet labor, my husband and I found her with 4 kittens under our bed, and Now they are 6 weeks old. she is still nursing every now and then, the kittens are on kitten chow and they are mostly starting to get the hang of the litter box I have been cleaning up a few accidents, but my question is when is the best time to give to a good home, they all have future homes(all family member ) we need to get the mother spayed but she is still nursing but also wants to desperately go outside too...and when is the best time to spray or neuter a kitten?
HI, I'm Dr Steve
As a rule 6 weeks is a good time to wean kittens as long as they are eating a fair amount of kitten food. Itisn't a bad idea to take them away from the mother for a week, but leave them there so they aren't too stressed out. Then you can watch to see how much kitten food they are eating and that they are getting enough to eat before they are moved to a new home.
I prefer to neuter and spay kittens when they are around 5 months old. This makes them more able to handle the anesthetic and lessof a surgical risk. THe mother could be safely spayed at around 3-4 weeks after she is done nursing. This gives her mammary glands time to shrink back to a normal nonpregnant state.
I hope this has helped. If it has would you please click the accept button so I may receive credit fo rmy answer. Thank you and good luck. I will check later to see if you have more questions.
