Customer Question

How long should I wait after having my male rat neutered, before I can put him back in with his sister without risking a pregnancy?

Optional Information:
Type of Animal: rat
Gender: Male
Age: Approx. 4 mos.
Name of Animal: Mugsey & Noodle

Already Tried:
Had Mugsy neutered about 1 and 1/2 mos. ago.

Thank you for your question.

If Mugsy has been separated from Noodle for 6 weeks, then there is no reason why he can't go back to sharing a cage at this stage. In a research study, the lingering fertility of castrated rats was found to be one week. That said, we usually separate them for at least two weeks to be sure.

I hope this information is helpful.
Please do let me know if you have any further questions.
If you have no further questions, feedback is always appreciated.

All the best,

Dr. B.
