I have a 5 week old great Dane pup. He throws up after he eats then he eats the vomit and acts like he feels better. We just have him some dewormer and he threw that up also. He seems to be a loner, always sleeping and laying by hisself. There is no blood in his stool or vomit. This started about 3 days ago, but he is still gaining at least 3oz a day. What could this be?
Optional Information: Type of Animal: Great dane Gender: Male Age: 5 weeks Name of Animal: Harley Already Tried: We haven't tried anything yet. Prolly gonna take him to a vet Monday .
Welcome! I would be happy to assist you. I am a 2003 graduate from UC Davis and a Medical Director of a veterinarian practice.Hello, Sorry to hear how Harley is doing. I am a bit suspicious for intestinal parasites. Not just worms. Also, giardia or coccidia!Definitely, a fecal test is a must.Bring in a fresh poop sample to the veterinarian. Ideally, within a few hours. Request that it be sent “OUT” to the laboratory instead of being looked at in the hospital (more accurate that way). We are not interested in only worm eggs, but also checking for the very common microscopic bugs like giardia and coccidia. These types of parasites will not be cured with over-the-counter dewormers. Giardia can also be difficult to identify on routine fecal tests, so ask your vet if they always add a “giardia elisa” to the fecal test. Here is more detailed information about fecal testing:Fecal TestingIf Harley has not been dewormed before just trying, he was at least 2 weeks overdue. Very important. So, could still be a worm issue taking a toll on the stomach. We also can't rule-out the chance that he ingested a foreign body. Try to take him to vet tomorrow. Any vet, to start some supportive care and testing. Good LuckDr. Andy Please reply ANY time more information is needed using the REPLY TO EXPERT button. We started the dewormer at 1 weeks old, he is out of a litter of 14. He is already sold to a good home and my biggest concern is his health! Could it be the dog food? We feed them diamond large breed puppy food. He didn't start throwing up till he was eating majority dog food. Should we be giving him some puppy formula? And would this problem be a reason why he is a loner or are some dogs just like that?
Well, diamond foods are currently in a recall! You need to take the food back to where you bought it and find it if your bag is part of the recall. So, I can't say no to the food. But, also very concerned about giardia or coccidia. If already on a regular diet, no need for formula.Yes, the illness could be greatly impacting his overall health and activity level.http://www.newsinferno.com/food-poisoning/22-salmonella-cases-tied-to-tainted-dog-food/38775Hope that info helpsDr. Andy Please reply ANY time more information is needed using the REPLY TO EXPERT button.
