My 14 year old miniature schnauzer has very bad breath. I know her teeth need cleaning but what I do at home doesn't seem to be working and her vet says she is too old for anesthesia. What do you suggest?

Thank you for your question concerning Phoebe. Does Phoebe have any medical problems that you are aware of?

Does Phoebe have any medical problems that you are aware of? 14 years of age is certainly not too old for anesthesia unless she has significant underlying medical problems, which still would not mean anesthesia would be out of the question but would mean that possibly extra safety measures should be taken. A healthy older dog with proper anesthetic measures (pre-anesthetic blood work, thorough monitoring while under anesthesia including blood pressure, pulse oximetry, and EKG, and intravenous fluids during the procedure) all make for a relatively safe anesthesia, even for our older patients. Please let me know if you have further questions.
