Customer Question

MY DOG IS NOW IN HIS 16TH YEAR ABOUT 1O YEARS AGO HE DEVELOPED A LUMP ON HIS UNDERBELLY. THE VET HAS CHECKED IT TWICE AND TOLD US IT WAS A LIPOMA AND IF HE EVER NEEDED SURGERY FOR ANYTHING ELSE THEY WOULD REMOVE IT . MY DOG HAS NEVER NEEDED SURGERY OR INDEED ANOTHER TRIP TO THE VET .HOWEVER WE NEVER EXPECTED HIM TO LIVE THIS LONG AND THE LUMP IS NOW THE SIZE OF A LARGE GRAPEFRUIT IT DOESNT SEEM TO CAUSE HIM A PROBLEM .I AM NOW BECOMING CONCERNED AS IT IS STILL GROWING BUT I DONT BELEIVE AT HIS AGE HE WOULD SURVIVE AN OPERATION. HE STILL EATS REALLY WELL GOES FOR WALKS AND IS VERY LIVELY WHEN MY GRANDSON IS HERE. HE DOES STRUGGLE SOME DAYS WITH ARTHRITIS SHOULD I HAVE HIM PUT TO SLEEP BECAUSE OF THE LUMP HE IS A VERY LOVED MEMBER OF OUR FAMILY WHAT SHOULD I DO ?

Hi, I will be happy to help you with your situation.

I don't think the mass is a reason to put your beloved "old man" to sleep. If the mass is not bleeding, infected or sore, then I would not worry about it at this point. Is it making walking or laying down difficult?

If he gets around ok then I would just let him be. If his arthritis bothers him, you can talk to your veterinarian about medication to help him get around better.

I feel like your dog could survive the surgery, if his physical exam and blood and urine values are normal, but his recovery time would probably be prolonged due to the size of the mass.

if you have any more questions, I will be happy to answer them
