Hi could you please give me some advice. My dog is 13 years old and has started coughing she has only been in contact with my other dog. She is a retriever and is on rimifin tablets 50mg one in morning and half at night. these she has been on for some time now. I have a problem getting her to the vet as I cannot get her in and out of the car on my own. Thank you Sue Smith

Hi Sue,
Welcome to Just Answer. I'm sorry to hear about this girl's coughing. Is she still eating and drinking well despite it? Does she still seem active?
she has is not eating as well and is not as active very slow and panting most of the time. sleepint a lot more.
Is she breathing harder when she's not coughing?
Yes
OK. This is a situation where her age, the coughing, and her breathing harder when she's not coughing have me concerned. If she was around a lot of dogs who had coughing or upper respiratory signs, then a case of kennel cough could be suspect. But given the other dogs she's around (and I'm assuming that they aren't coughing or acting ill), it doesn't seem like she has a lot of exposure. The coughing could be due to primary lung or heart issues. My best advise is to get her to your vet as soon as possible for them to evaluate her. I know you have a problem getting her into the car, but maybe a friend or neighbor can help with that. At the clinic, the staff there can definitely help. At home, all you can do there is to let her rest and to see if starts to breath better. That isn't much. Getting her to the vet will allow them to see what more can be done to help her get through this.
thank you for your help you have just told me what I suspected but I will get her to my vet as soon as possible.thanks again.
I'm hoping for the best for this girl.
I did take her to the vet and you were right. We now have a very hard decision to make. thank you for your help yesterday.
I'm sorry that you have a hard decision to make. Did they diagnose her with heart disease?
In cases like this, there are no wrong decisions. I hope you make the best one at this time for you and her. Let me know if I can help further.
