Hi there I'm Dr Goodall and I'd like to help.
The most common cause of coughing in an otherwise healthy dog is Infectious Tracheobronchitis otherwise known as Kennel Cough. This infection doesn't have to be contracted at a kennels though - your dog may have picked it up from other dogs in the park, or it can just be caught by airborne particles.
how would i treat it?
Typically this infection presents as a hacking 'seal bark' type cough.
how long will it last?
Luckily most cases of kennel cough resolve by themselves within 2 weeks. The infection can be caused by a number of different viruses and occasionally bacteria. Since most cases are viral, antibiotics don't help, and so there is no definitive treatment to cure it.
Benadryl is fine to give to ease the cough
so i just let him cough it out til he gets rid of it
As long as he remains bright and still eating/drinking etc, then yes, i'm afraid it is a waiting game. Also, be sure to keep him away from other dogs a it is very infectious.
Can I just check - what breed is your dog?
I'm not sure? I've been told he looks like a mix between a boxer and boston terrier.
That's fine - just checking he isn't a breed prone to tracheal collapse like yorkies.
ok. so, as long as he is still playful, he is ok?
Yes, its almost certainly kennel cough if he seems well apart from the cough.
ok. thank you m'am
No problem, glad to be a help. I hope he's better soon!
