what is spaying
Optional Information: Type of Animal: Cat Gender: female Age: 1+ Already Tried: Nothing. We adopted this cat, were told she was spayed, but she is lactating and has gained significant girth in the month we've had her. We know she's lactating because we also adopted a much younger kitten at the same time, and he is nursing. She is also hyper-aggressive with our dog, who doesn't bother her at all.
Hi there
Howdy.
Spaying is the surgical procedure which removes part of the uterus and both ovaries so a female can not reproduce. When you push on her nipple does milk come out?
I guess the question is whether she could be spayed while pregnant.
Haven;t tried that, but the kitten spends a fair amount of time there, so we assume there's some benefit.
The way you describe the procedure, it doesn't seem that a pregnant cat could stay pregnant after spaying.
No , spaying a cat would eliminate any pregnancy. Sometimes kittens will suckle even though there is no milk- it is comforting.
There should be a scar on ger belly from the spay.
No scar that we can find. She's a Maine Coon and has lots of fur, so it might have grown over. No milk coming out of the nipples, but the kitten has been at it for a while this evening. She's probably just fat and he's just suckling for comfort. Both are rescue animals.
Chances are she is already spayed- and the kitten is just using her for comfort. You can have your vet shave her belly and confirm there is a spay scar-just to be sure!
