My dog just had his dew claws removed and keeps chewing the bandages off of one foot. He has a cone on. What can we do to prevent this from continueing?
Optional Information: Type of Animal: Sheltie dog Gender: Male Age: 1 Already Tried: Reinforcing the bandage. Giving him a chew stick. He was on pain pills as he was neutered at the time the claws were removed. We watch him and redirect him when he chews on the bandage.
Hi there,I will do my best to answer your question. I would recommend attempting a larger Elizabethan "cone" collar or a different style. You can purchase these at most pet stores. If he is still able to chew with the cone on, it is likely too small. If this does not work, you can purchase bitter apple or bitter orange at the pet store and spray it lightly on the bandage. When he tries to chew, it will cause a very bitter taste in his mouth to stop this behavior. White vinegar mixed with water OR original Listerine mouthwash may also work if you cannot purchase bitter apple. I hope this information helps,-Dr. Jessica
