My boxer is limping on his back leg, can I give him advil?
Optional Information: Type of Animal: boxer Gender: male Age: 3 Already Tried: He was limping a month ago and it was a sprain and went away the next day, he is limping again
Hello, The only over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory I recommend in dogs (NOT CATS) is aspirin. Due to potential toxicity issues if not dosed correctly, many veterinarians do not consider Tylenol, Ibuprofen (Advil), and Aleve safe. You can give 10mg per pound of body weight up to every 12 hours. Just remember, there are different pill sizes for aspirin, so look to see if it is an adult pill, extra strength, etc…Aspirin can be upsetting to the stomach, so discontinue if any digestive upset and definitely consult a vet if not helpful. Also, aspirin is really not that effective for pain in dogs, so you'll really want to consider getting into a vet for better medication. ***Do not give aspirin or any other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication if your pet is already on prednisone or any other anti-inflammatory medication***Severe stomach and intestinal ulcers can result from giving a pet aspirin, tylenol or ibuprofen when they are also on medications like Rimadyl, Deramaxx, Prednisone, Metecam, Zubrin, and Previcox***As a side note:My primary concerns for limping on a "back leg" include:- fracture- partial or complete tear of the cruciate ligament in the knee (very common)- some other soft tissue injury. Should I take him to the vet, or can it get better with asprin. Last time the Vet gave him a shot and meds for a week and he was better in a day
I would not rely on aspirin at all. Well worth not only a recheck examination but I would also get some x-rays at this point. With it being a recurrent problem, that is worth further investigation. Dr. Andy
