Should I have my Cavalier King Charles Spaniels hair cut short

Customer Question

Should I have my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's hair cut short for the summer?

Hi, thanks for your question! In general, the answer to this question depends on the dog's lifestyle. For a dog who spends 95% of the time indoors, in the air conditioning, it is not likely to matter if long hair is present in the summer. However, if significant time is spent outside during the warmer months, your Cavalier will be more comfortable without the long hair coat. Wearing all of that extra hair is no different from a person wearing extra clothing.

After I have it cut, will it grow back in nicely, or will it ruin his coat?

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are not prone to the post-clipping coat problems that some of the "fuzzy" breeds experience (such as pomeranians, keeshonds, samoyeds). I would expect the coat to grow back completely normally, just like human hair.
