Customer Question

My dog is drinking a lot of water, has diarrhea and seems to be breathing more heavily than usual (not panting). What could this be?

Welcome to JustAnswer! I am a licensed veterinarian and would be glad to help!

Did all of the signs start together?

Weight loss?

Vomiting?

No, they didn't. She started drinkiing a lot a few days ago. She has been urinating in the house, which she almost never does. Her appetite seemed diminshed over the past few days. Every few hours, she makes a sound like she has something caught in her throat. Overnight, she developed very loose bowels. Today only, it seems like her breathing is a bit labored. It could be my imagination, as I'm watching her more closely than usual. She ate a normal dinner.

I worry with these signs that this is more than just stomach upset.

While you can try a bland diet such as chicken and rice for the diarrhea - if you notice continue drinking or urination changes or believe the breathing changes are something real - I would see your veterinarian for evaluation including bloodwork and x-rays.

The above is given for information only. Although I am a licensed veterinarian, I cannot legally prescribe medicines or diagnose your pet's condition without performing a physical exam. If you have concerns about your pet I would highly advise contacting your regular veterinarian

Again, I don't think you answered my question and just gave me common sense advice which I already knew. I would like to know what could cause the sound in her throat, the incontinence and the diarrhea, all at the same time. Can you suggest some cause? If all you tell me is to take her to the vet, you have not told me anything.
Expert:  CriticalCareVet replied 3 years ago.
No - there is not one cause which can easily explain those signs.

Testing is needed to determine why your dog is sick.

I am sorry I didnt tell you anything. Best of luck.
Customer: replied 3 years ago.
Relist: Other.
The answer given had no medical content, just common sensse and no advice on how to proceed, other than to take the dog to the vet. I don't need to pay to have someone tell me that.
Customer: replied 3 years ago.
I am sorry, but I do not intend to pay for this answer as it is not really an answer at all. I will have to take my dog to the vet and you have not given me any information at all with which to assess her situation prior to doing that. I don't know if her symptoms signal an emergency, something probably not dangerous, etc. You have made no attempt to even describe what might be going on. Thank you for trying to help me.

Best of luck
