What treatments are available for treating hemolytic anemia in dogs? My Lhasa Poo is currently on injections of Dexamethasone twice a day but I am only getting in about 2 mg at a time.
Optional Information: Type of Animal: Lhasa Poo Gender: female spayed Age: 6 years Already Tried: She has been on Dexamethasone injections twice daily since Dec. 20. I am only getting in about 2 mg per dose. She was doing quite well but in the last 3 days is going backwards not eating, not moving around much.
Hi there and welcome to Just answer!! I am Dr. Loretta, a licensed veterinarian and I am happy to answer your question.
If this is an Auotimmune Hemolytic Anemia, this is a very serious disease and has a high mortality rate if the correct medications are not given. Your girl needs to be on Prednisone at 1 mg per pound and Cytoxan which is a strong immuno suppressive agent. We will also put your girl on an antibiotic so guard against secondary infections caused by the immuno suppression.
Talk to your vet..here is a site that has more details but it is extremely important that your girl be on prednsione, Cytoxan or Cyclosporine and antibiotics.

Thank you very much for your reply. I have contacted my vet and am going to ask about the Cytoxan or Cyclosporine when he returns my call.
This is actually a second time of it. She initially had a response to Bactrim when being treated for bladder stones 2 years ago.
Good for you!Hopefully, on the correct medication, this will resolve.have a Great day!
