Hi, I am Dr. Peter and would like to help.

1- How long has this been going on?

2- Are there any lesions on the skin?

3- Is he licking his paws?

4- Can you rub the tips of his ears against each other for 10 seconds and see if this will make his back legs move as if he wanted to scratch?

Customer: replied 6 years ago.
It's been about 3 days. I do not see any lesions but he does lick and bite his paws. Rubbing his ears together did not make him scratch.
Expert:  Dr. Peter replied 6 years ago.

If he is licking his paws and bitting this could be a sign of allergies. In dogs, food allergies is a common cause for itching. I would recommend to consider doing a food trial for 4-6 weeks with a food that he has not eaten before. Not a different brand, but, a different source of protein and carbohydrate like lamb and rice. You can look at brands like eukanuba, iams, or science diet for an elimination diet. During the food trial do not feed anything else but his new diet. In the meantime, start him on Benadryl 1 mg per pound body weight every 8-12 hours.

If you have additional questions I will be glad to answer them.

My older dog is diabetic and only eats EN. So I feed this dog (Jimmy) only EN too. Can dogs get poison ivy?

Expert:  Dr. Peter replied 6 years ago.
They can get poison ivy, but, it is rare. If you washed his coat the symptoms will go away.
Customer: replied 6 years ago.

He had a bath yesterday and is still itchy. I'll give him Benadryl. Help him sleep (us too!).

Thanks for your help!
