I am suffering from frequent, recurrent bladder infections (or what I believe are bladder infections.)I have had six in the last seven months. I recently had a urine culture and it was negative. I just traveled by plane for a business meeting and woke up last night with the typical burning and "spasm type" pain during urination. I started my antibiotic that I always travel with and the symptoms are resolving.I just read about IC and am wondering if an IC flare up would respond to an antibiotic or if I really have an UTI infection. my culture was done 10 days ago. Unfortunately I was not in a situation that I could go to a urgent care facility and ask for a urine culture. I do have an appointment with my urologist next month but am curious about the possibility that I have IC.

Thanks for your question. If I don't respond to you immediately, it is because I am busy with a patient. I WILL get back to you ASAP.IC does not respond to antibiotics. If your urine culture was negative, this is not likely an infection either (but it is a possibility) What is more likely is that you are having bladder spasms from a condition called overactive bladder and this can cause symptoms similar to a UTI. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do but wait to see your urologist when they can examine you to determine if you need to be started on a medication like oxybutynin to stop these potential spasms. Hope this helps and let me know if you have questions.
