About 9 days ago I went to the bathroom with no prior symptoms and urinated what appeared to be almost pure blood it was not completely red but near it. I had none of the usual urgency to go or burning until I used the bathroom at that time. I did have a few of those symptoms afterwards but not bad. I left work and went to urgent care. By the time I got there it was more yellow with a rose tint to it. they did a urinalysis and said I had a pretty bad UTI I was on bactrim for 7 days. I had been nauseated since this past Saturday and generally not feeling well. I went back to urgent care yesterday and they retested my urine no UTI but microscopic blood (they said very small amount). I'm not sure if the bactrim caused the nausea or not. I am concerned there is still blood showing in my urine and today it is a dark or medium orange. I have some lower back pain not bad. I guess I am concerned about kidney or bladder cancer. I work at a VA Medical Center and the doctor here told me that was nonsense. But I would like your oppionion.
HelloWas a scan done like an ultrasound of the abdomen?Do you smoke? What is your age and sex?Do you have family history of kidney/ bladder cancer? Please let me knowDr.Tharun
I hae had probably 4-5 scans of abdomen in the last 8 months I have diverticulitis. 2 Scans were done with contrast 1 in the past 2 months they were not done for this problem but to diagnose diverticulitis flair up but I assume when read by the radiologists if he saw something i would have been notified correct? And it would show bladder and kidneys? No history of bladder cancer my grandmothers sister had kidney cancer yes i smoke and i am 54 and female
HIThe fact that you had a fair number of scans in the last few months almost would have diagnosed a cancer in the kidneys/ Bladder,Scans are sensitive and sharp now a days and difficult to miss cancer mass in the scans(especially if it is CT scan). The fact that you had severe UTI in the results makes it more likely to be infective in origin than cancerous.Of course you fall in high risk group due to smoking. If the blood in the urine comes again you should undergo a cystoscopy to see the inside of the bladder.Kidney lesions are easily seen on CT scans and would have been detected on previous scans if it was present at that time.UTI are known to cause nausea and loss of appetite.Antibiotics can also cause stomach upset .So you have more than one reason for the nausea.Drink plenty of water and get the urine checked after some days.If it still shows blood , it is time to go for a cystoscopy.Stopping of smoking is advised and would be in your favor.I hope this answers your questionRegardsDr.Tharun
