I have a long history of BPH. I have successfully taken medications for it during that time and although the flow is not what it should be, it has been manageable. Over the last two days I have been living a nightmare in that I have the constant urge to urinate even if there is nothing to urinate. When I do urinate it is uncomfortable bordering on painful. Last night I got up 30 times, plus or minus. It seems that when there is even a drop of urine build up I have the urgent need to go to bathroom and then only a drop or two comes out. To make matters worse, this suddenly is accompanied by going number 2 a massive number of times as well so that it is inflamed down there and I am using Desitin. My wife thinks I have a bladder infection. I am drinking cranberry juice like mad. What do you suggest? Thank you.

Desitin and cranberry juice
Thanks for your question. If I don't respond to you immediately, it is because I am busy with a patient. I WILL get back to you ASAP.Your wife is right. This sounds like you either have a severe urine infection or you have an infection of the prostate called prostatitis. You need to get in to see your doctor or a urologist for a prostate exam and a urine culture and you'll need to be started on an antibiotic like ciprofloxacin for 30 days to treat this infection. You can take ibuprofen 800 mg every 8 hours for 7-10 days to decrease the inflammation of the prostate that is causing the pain. Hope this helps and let me know if you have questions. Just use reply. Thanks.
