Hi

There are different causes for this narrowing.

One is age related - due to menopause, the hormones are deficient can cause dryness and eventually narrowing due to shrinking of the tube.

Other reason is repeated infection in the urethra which cause scar tissue to form while healing - again contraction of the scar tissue will narrow the urethra.

Any injury while doing previous urological procedure can injure the region and cause narrowing when the injury heals. It could be trauma related also - like accidents.

Last is compression due to external organs like cervical growth, falling forward of the uterus, large fibroids, rectal growths etc.

So according to the cause of the narrowing the treatment is directed.Female urethra is small(only 4 cm ) and hence can be easily dilated locally in the doctor's office.

Only if the narrowing is due to external compression, we have to treat the root cause. So in case of fibroid, we have to remove the fibroid like that.

I hope this clears your doubt and answers your query.

Regards

Dr.Tharun
