I had day surgery 6 days ago for a bladder sling. Unfortunately, I cannot void my bladder on my own and no longer even feel the "urge". When I insert the cateter, I have to lay on my back because it feels like my urethra is "blocked". Is this common?
Optional Information: Person's Gender: Female Person's Age: 40 Already Tried: catheter inserted for 3 days then given a small one to do myself daily. Have tried to insert while sitting and standing. Only laying down works.
Thanks for your question. If I don't respond to you immediately, it is because I am either in the OR or traveling. I WILL get back to you ASAP.Do you have a history of diabetes or other medical problems?Did you have trouble urinating before surgery?
My doctor also performed a D/C and laparoscopy to remove cysts.
I had issues when I coughed, exercised, sneezed etc.
I do not have diabetes or other medical issues.
This problem that you have with urinary retention after a sling placement can happen about 20% of the time. Sometimes, it can take up to 4 to 6 weeks for you to begin to urinate normally again. You need to continue to catheterize intermittently for the next 4 to 6 weeks. If you still cannot urinate after this timeframe, then you may need an operation to cut the sling to loosen it. Hope this helps and let me know if you have questions.
