Hi 2 weeks ago i noticed coca cola coloured urine first thing in the morning.I took a sample a few hours later and went to my Dr the next day were they discovered I had a lot of blood in my urine. It also contained protein but no white cells apparently ruling out infection.Thet asked me to give a sample there and then and that was negative for blood or proteins,.There was no sign of infection. The Dr sent me for a blood test and ultrasound of the bladder and kidneys. The ultrasound showed a cyst on the right kidney and a stone 8mm x 7mm in the left and no lesions or abnormalities in the bladder. The bloods were normal. However my Dr was concerned because the urine sample showed that the blood was coming from lower down not the kidney because the blood cells weren't squashed???? I had no symptoms. However 2 days before this happened I had acupuncture and she inserted a needle just above my pubic bone in the bladder area and I felt a very strange sensation.I felt like I wanted to urinate and felt a strange tingling sensation that lasted for a couple of minutes.my Gp seems to think that she could have pierced the bladder or caused a bleed.I also had a cold when this happened and weeks before hand had had a chesty cold that lasted some time. I have been testing my urine and it has been 2 weeks since this occurring and have had no blood in urine until last night when I took a sample which showed blood but 10 minutes later another sample was negative.I have had no blood showing since.Just before I tested positive for blood in urine last night I had a slight pain in my groin but nothing hugely significant. I have appt with urologist on Thursday and am really anxious about this situation.I am 43 year old female. Thankyou for reading this.

Hello there,Please be patient, as I may be in the operating room, with a patient, or driving but will get back to you ASAP.If indeed the acupuncturist placed a needle into your bladder. this will not at all cause any long term damage and has healed by now, so I would not worry about this. More likely is that the blood is from the stone and the stone will need to be treated by shocking it into little pieces and breaking it up. I don't think you can really tell id blood is coming from the kidney or bladder. The urologist may want to do an office scope of the bladder as well to make sure things looks okay there. Hope this helps.
Is it possible for the accupunture needle to do this and it has been 2 weeks could it still cause some bleeding and why does a sample show positive for moderate blood one test but 10 minutes later negative without a trace of blood?.The Dr seemed to think that the shape of the blood cells could give indication of were it is coming from.Is this true? thankyou so much

Sorry for the delay. It is possible for the acupuncture needle to cause bleeding but this would heal after a couple of days and the bleeding should stop very soon. It would not last 2 weeks. One of those urine tests were obviously wrong as they should not change in 10 minutes. These dip urine tests are many times not reliable. I have been in urology for over 10 years and have never heard about different blood cell shapes determining where blood is coming from.
Sorry I didnt explain that very well I took a test on the urine sample and it showed positive for a lot of blood. Then 10 minutes later I took another fresh sample of urine and it showed negative. I would have thought if there was significant blood to show up on test then surely the blood in your bladder does not completely disappear in 10 minutes. Wouldn't a new sample show at least traces of blood.yes I was confused about the blood cell shape that was in my urine. Is the stone big in your opinion?Thankyou so much for you patience in my many queries. You are making me feel less anxious about this situation because I am terrified I have something catastrophic in my bladder.
The stone is big enough that it needs surgical treatment. Yes, I would expect the new urine sample to show blood. I do not know why it did not other than lab error. I still would not worry too much about it as it should not be a problem. The stone is really the only thing you need addressed.
Thankyou so much. The GP who was lovely was the one that planted the seed about possible bladder cancer so naturally I have spent the last 2 weeks freaking out.I am in Australia and most urologists that I am aware of dont perform cystoscopy in there surgeries. It is done under a general and is day surgery.I dont want to go through this if it is not necessary. As I said previously the ultrasound showed nothing in the bladder. Also if the original blood test that had significant blood in it was more than 24 hours old would they be able to determine weather there were cancer cells in the specimen or any subsequent urine samples not showing blood.Hope this makes seance to you .PS were do you or have you worked as a urologist.
Cancer can be evaluated in the urine by sending it for cancer cell testing called a cytology of the urine. This is easy to do and your doctor should do this. There is no evidence at all you have cancer so I would not worry too much. Hope this helps. Don't forget to hit the green accept button so I get credit for working with you. Thanks.
they did cytology but the sample was 24 hours after the event. The report said no casts or dysmorphic red blood cells were seen. What does that mean?
I have just tested my urine and again have blood in it but 10 minutes later a fresh sample was negative.I cant work it out......
There is no evidence you have cancer. A urine cytology and a cystoscopy can confirm this. I think you have to assume there is blood in the urine so you need this looked at. Don't forget to hit the green accept button so I get credit for working with you. Thanks.
1 more question. Is it possible for a kidney stone to move around in the kidney and not cause pain but cause blood in the urine on and off.Can you explain why this happens?
Absolutely it is common and happens a lot. The stone moves around and irritates the tissue. This causes blood. Stones are very small and mobile and that is why they are mobile and bounce around. When they get stuck in the ureter is when you get pain.
