Customer Question

I had a uteroscopy and lithotripsy 10 days ago for a 5x3mm stone that was in the upper ureter. They pushed the stone into the kidney with a scope and then did the lithotripsy. After surgery all stone pieces ended up in my distal ureter and were partially obstructing for 1 week. I passed 2 pcs 4 days ago and 2 pcs 3 days ago. Those pcs measure up to at least 5mm. I haven't passed any additional fragments. I still have intermittent flank pain and am passing what looks like to pieces of white tissue with a little blood on it. After passing the tissue pieces the flank pain subsides. The pieces are about a US dime size or smaller. I am passing several a day. Is this normal this many days after surgery? What are the tissue pieces? Is it normal for them to cause flank pain when passing? I also get what feels like a stinging sensation in the tip of the penis. More often when I have an empty bladder then when I have a full one. The CT scan 4 days after the surgery said there was pereniphric stranding, mild hydropronesis, and prominence of left trigone which could represent edema possibly due to manipulation. No fever, chills. I am finishing up a 7 day course of Cipro. I was taking Rapaflo for 3 days and have stopped that after the stones passed. I am also taking Percocet for pain.

Dr. Y :

Thanks for your question. If I don't respond to you immediately, it is because I am either in the OR or traveling. I WILL get back to you ASAP.

Dr. Y :

Is this normal this many days after surgery? What are the tissue pieces? Is it normal for them to cause flank pain when passing?

Dr. Y :

Is this normal this many days after surgery?Yes. You can have this passage of stones and tissue for even as long as 30-40 days after the lithotripsy

Dr. Y :

IWhat are the tissue pieces? I- The tissue pieces are likely pieces of the tissue in the ureter from irritation from the stones that are stuck and trying to pass

Dr. Y :

Is it normal for them to cause flank pain when passing? - Yes. This pain is from obstruction of the kidney due to stone blockage as the stones are trying to pass. Your doctor should have prescribed Flomax to take while the stones are passing to make them pass sooner and with less pain. You should ask about this. Hope this helps.

The stones have already passed.
Would the tissue pieces themselves continue to cause flank pain?

Yes they can if they cause blockage to the kidney
