You should get a ten digit UTR (Universal Tax Reference) between four and six weeks after you have registered the company name with Companies House since HM Revenue & Customs are automatically notified of new company formations.

I opened the company on 1 April and have not received anything yet should I contact them direct? I have received the HMRC new employer pack on how to get the payroll started etc - would the number be in with this pack?

I don't think you will find the UTR in the new employer pack. You might try calling the tax office that issued it to ask them if they can see a number on their computer system for your company.
