The loan has been repaid by person A in full. They are seeking remaining 12k GBP from person B. Person B paid 17k back before stopping payment. They had a verbal agreement, and on email was written payments are being made out of good faith, not legal obligation by person B. Person B is owed money in extra rent, gifts and general every day expenses during the 5 years they were together. Your advice above is very helpful.
