Do I need a visa to the UK for the following scenario: I will be attending the Queen Mary University of London School of Law for this coming fall semester. I will not be working, my tuition has been paid, and I will be there from Sept 6, 2010 to December 15, 2010.
Also, I would like to be able to travel to different countries on holiday weekends.

I am an American with an American passport. I live in California. I was told that I do not need a visa for my trip but I would like confirmation from an expert.

If you are coming here as a visitor and studying for less than 6 months then no you do not need a visa . If you intend to be here for more than 6 months then you do need a visa. So if you are only here for the single semester ( term) there is no problem. whether you need visas to travel at the weekends will depend on the countries you are visiting I recommend you make sure you can show that you have sufficient funds for your stay and a return ticket to California
