Customer Question

I have an Akai AA-A! tuner amp which has given good service over many years.
Recently the radio stoped woking with no light on the dial, but the cd and tv inputs still work perfectly. I can get around the problem by playing the radio via my Sky receiver, but I would like to know if it is a simple fix?

Hi and welcome to JustAnswer,

Thank you for the question and your patience. Should you still need assistance...

Initially, please re-confirm the Akai's model number.

Offhand and as this would almost always be an internal hardware issue, are you then considering a DIY (do-it-yourself) repair approach? Do you have access to / comfortable in the use of a multimeter and perhaps even a soldering iron/hot-air station?

Customer replied 374 days and 8 hours ago.

Sorry for the delay, only Ihave not had an e-mail from you until this week.

The Tuner/Amp is an Akia AA-A1.

Yes I have a multi meter and a soldering iron if they are required.

Regards Dave

Great on the DIY!

Just an update
; located the Service Manual / schematics. Doing a review. Would post again with initial diagnosis and test procedures in a while. May not be that immediate; bear with me.

Offhand, proposed test for the presence of +12~15V on:

  • • before and after Rs 146, 121, 133, 161, 162, 176.

Hi

You are refering to items on the board schematics I assume.

I do not have these schematics so I do not know where I am to look for the test you refer to.

Could you say where abouts on the circuit board I should test for the 12v (presumably DC)

Appreciate the post back. To your queries:

  • • 12v (presumably DC) - as posted above, +12 hence it would be DC due to the presence of the prefix +;
  • • do not know where - the main issue is on the radio / tuner section. The above proposed test would be on the resistors in the same section likewise. The tuner section would be right side. R146 is near the MW/AM switch, R121 near IC101, R133 between VC102 and C128, R161 near crystal X101, R162 in line with R161 and R176 near IC103;
  • • do not have these schematics - would an electronic copy be of help?

Customer replied 372 days and 9 hours ago.

Hi

Thanks for your reply. Yes electronic copy would help a lot.

Regards Dave

Ps Sometimes after a while the radio starts working and the light on the tuner dial lights.

This is very significant as it would indicate that possibly:

  • • a cold solder issue (most likely);
  • • low or initially missing +12 (likely);
  • • a capacitor that takes time to charge up (least likely);

Have requested a moderator to forward to you the download link + password XXXXX the schematics and board layout. May not be immediate though.
