Samsung LE40M87bdx/Xeu There is a locked picture on the screen and no sound. The colours are really very weird and hard to describe. All the colours are swimming in a way that oil appears in a puddle - only much more vivid. The picture also has a snowy quality. About 2inches in from the left is a series of dark vertical bars about an inch wide from top to bottom of screen. Trying to operate volume or mute controls produces a 'not available message'. The faults are the same on internal tuner or external video source. Steve

Hello Steve
Sorry for delay in helping you here....
OK this could be bad firmware I have seen this type of thing happen when the firmware goes bad so initially I want you to try and reset the mainboard to factory default you do this from a standby situation then press INFO...MENU...MUTE...Power On and the set should come on in service mode hopefully you can see the lettering on the screen ok, then you need to navigate to reset enter it then press ok the set should re-boot and all previous data will be lost.....let me know what happens here
If no go please take a photo and either upload using the green tree icon on your toolbar or a free photosite like www.tinypic.com and send me the link please
Many Thanks
Anthony
Thanks Anthony. This is a friends set and I will try this suggestion later. The fault apparently appeared after accepting an on screen invitation to upgrade so corrupted software is a strong possibility. I've been to the Samsung site looking for new firmware but couldn't find any.
Happy Christmas,
Steve
PS I like your scope trace colour bars logo!
Hello
OK let me know how this goes
You may need to contact samsung but do this first and let me know
Thanks
Reset as advised. This restored sound control but left the picture unchanged. I will upload a couple of screen shots as you suggest. Please acknowldege thismail so that I will have a reply tab to give you a link to the photos.
Rhanks

OK yes send photos when ready
The link is http/i54.tinypic.com/nowkyd.jpg
I've managed to cut off a bit of the left of the screen, but you can just see the vertical lines on the left.
Happy Christmas!
Sorry the link isnt working?
Sorry about that. I did try it, but you're right- it doesn't work now. Try this LINK please;

Hmm its the vertical bars that make this a bit uncertain...
Is the menu screen generated by the set bad or is this ok ie the sets own menu?
I'm not sure I quite understand the question. That is the set's self generated menu screen in the photo and the bars are on any picture the set produces. It could be that the bars are seperate fault pre-dating the current problem. I will try and find out.
Yes if you can provide as much info on this as you can it does help
The vertical lines are apparently a seperate fault which appeared sometime before. The main fault appeared when the owner followed an invitation to update. I presume this was a channel update as the set is not connected to the internet in any way. Or do they do software upgrades via freeview transmissions as well?
Their is no over-air download software for this set its only available from samsung either via the site or you may need to ask if they will send you it, this should be your first tackle of the fault on the set
It is possible the tcon board or panel (screen)is faulty but try and get the software first upgradeable through the usb or sd service port on the set and take it from there to at least get the set back to some normality, the lines can be looked at later
I got on to Samsung UK to try and download the software. They in turn have passed me onto a local service centre where you hold for 15 mins then get cut off. I will keep trying.
OK
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you due to the protracted holiday period and the Samsung Service Centre I've been waiting on being closed. Basically it's impossible to talk to an engineer there and everything passes through office staff. My request for the software simply falls on deaf ears. They first wanted to book an engineer for £90 plus VAT for a 'reset'. When I told them this had already been tried, they insist the set has to go in. Is there any way of getting the software from another source? Obviously I deeply resent forking out £110 for what most manufacturers give away on their websites- especially as all this is to help a single parent who has little money.
All the best,
I have missed something with this set...
It can only be upgraded using specialist laptop software through the service jack using a jig lead, you wont be able to do this, many 2006 and 7 sets are like this its only later on that manuf went to usb and sd card upgrades
You caught between a rock and a hard place because you may have a faulty panel anyhow
Take the set to an independant repairer who may charge you £30 for clarifying if the panel is indeed faulty
