Skoda 1.6tdi Greenline Nov 2010 reg ECU light is on - most

Customer Question

Skoda 1.6tdi Greenline Nov 2010 reg ECU light is on - most likely the EGR is the problem. This was renewed 20,000 miles ago - two years running - if this is going to occur every 20k at considerable expense about £500 (valve is behind engine & requires drive shaft removal) I am considering blanking it off. Is it still ok to do this? What about insurance notification?
JA: Just to clarify, what are the exact lights you're talking about?
Customer: The one that looks like a a little engine - I have had the Glow plug light on but not at the moment.
JA: What is the make/model of your car?
Customer: Skoda 1.6 tdi Green line 2010 reg
JA: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: I would do it myself with a simple blanking kit, I have done nothing apart from giving the car a good run, it does a lot of fairly short journeys. The light did clear last week but has come back on again.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: I am a reasonably competent mechanic.

Hi I'm Kevin where did you get egr fitted ? Was it by dealer ?

Customer: replied 7 days ago.
it was an authorised Skoda franchise dealer in Derby.

Do you know weather vehicle software was updated at the same time ?

Customer: replied 5 days ago.
The health check sheet indicated EGR valve fault which was replaced at a total cost of £491 and the ECU light was reset, i.e. it was not on when I collected the vehicle, nothing else is indicated as having been carried out.

Ok on these the software is recommended to be updated to latest level to prolong the life of the egr valve . The short journeys won't help but they should be lasting more than two years
