I have a 2009 Mazda RX8 R3. Ever since I've bought it, 5th

Customer Question

I have a 2009 Mazda RX8 R3. Ever since I've bought it, 5th gear has always had a slight grind going from 4th to 5th at high engine speeds (6000+ RPM). One day, I completely lost 5th gear and 3rd became very stiff and hard to engage. I've now got a newly reconditioned gearbox, and the same thing is happening. I am worried I might lose another gearbox.

Hi Josh,

How often do you do 6000rpm in 4th gear?

How old is the new transmission now, and does it have a warranty?

Hi Gary,Not often, I'd say once in every 3 times I drive it.The transmission was fitted on 31/08/2016 and I've done approximately 100 miles on it since. It does come with a warranty, but seeing as this is the 2nd gearbox I've had do the same thing, I was wondering if it's a common fault.Josh

I wouldn't say it is common Josh.

At 100 miles old, I would be ringing the trans shop and explaining your situation.

Sounds like you have a baulking 5th synchro, if 5th is the only problem.

If 3rd is also still doing this, then I'd say there is a mainshaft endfloat issue.

Hope this helps.

Hi Gary,It's still doing it, but the gearbox company told me to leave it for a week because sometimes the gears take time to bed in.Thanks,
Josh

Hi Josh,

I would agree with that.

I would be a little more gentle on the box for a few hundred miles.
