The ECM can cause the engine to die but it can't cause a loss of power to the entire vehicle, except a rare case where it was causing the alternator to not charge and you continued to drive until the battery was dead. That doesn't appear to be the case though.

Why do you believe there is a short in the wiring harness; what circuit is shorted to what?
