I'm assuming the light isn't doing a bulb check when the key is first turned on, or there are fault codes set but the engine light isn't illuminated. If that's the case then the problem would have to be internal in the instrument cluster.

Is it not doing a bulb check for about two seconds when the key is first turned on?
