Volvo V70 D5: Hauto, we have recently purchased second hand

Customer Question

Hi Hauto, we have recently purchased second hand Volvo V70 D5 Automatic. We have driven it for the last couple of days and the gears do not seem to slip in to place once the car is warm - appears to run in one gear only. Today a 'Transmission Service Urgent' message appeared and then a 'Low Battery' message. We had to drive the last 20 miles with this and need to drive another 60 miles tomorrow (Sunday). We are obviously concerned. A new battery was purchased after having bought the car, as the previous one died after the car stood for a day - even though it had been driven for a couple of hundred miles the day before. There is a manual option for the gears but we have not yet tried this. The previous owner was a mechanic and had replaced the gearbox and repaired it Jan 2014, 18 months ago. He had flushed the gear oil (3 times flush) at 206,000 miles - the car is now at 222,000 miles. Any advice please with regards ***** ***** Urgent message. Thank you.

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!
It sounds as if the trans is going into limp in. When the trans controller sees an issue that can cause damage or thinks it doesn't have complete control it will lock you in a single gear.
Limp in can be caused by may things including solenoids, wiring, speed sensors, the trans controller and internal transmission issues.
The first step in diagnosis will be to see what fault codes are setting in the TCM. If it's going into limp in it's because the TCM has seen an issue and set a fault code, knowing what codes are setting will be necessary to begin diagnosis.
