Customer Question

Hi i have a 58 mondeo mk4 1.8 tdci edge.
The battery light has been coming on intermittently and is now on nearly all the time.
I have monitored voltage via obd2, light off it is 14.7v, light on 11.7 - 12.5v.
I want to check the smart charge system but only have a single pin lin bus connector not the 3 pin one!
How can i check if it is the smart charge that is the problem or the alt?

Hi there good evening to you
Ok the Lin bus single wire data system should read around 7-9 volts (multiplug connected )
This is a quick way to check the Lin bus system ( the best way is using an osilliscope to visually look at the data transfer signal ) but the quick multimeter check is one I use regulary
I have seen issues where by the relative inside the alternator has shorted internal giving a reading of 2-4 volts on this wire connected but 7-9 disconnected
In most cases the alternator is the issue but also check the dummy pulley on the accessory drive belt /alternator as there is a rubber bush in this dummy pulley which can split causing charging issues
But in most cases the alternator us the route cause of these issues
If you need anymore help or advice on this issue please let me know
