my 3.0l fiat engine when in gear is working as in neutral ,no power to wheels
Hello, I hope I can offer you some assistance.
Have you had any concerns previous to this? For example lacking power up hills? Are there any unusual noises when you try to drive the vehicle? Does the vehicle not try to move at all when you want to set off?
Let me know and I'll reply as soon as I'm able to.
Thank you.
hi sean i had no indication i was cruising in 6th gear when suddenly my revs shot up and i had no power to the wheels .there was no noise or vibration when stopped i could start the engine and select gears but it was like i was in neutral gear
Hello again, thank you for your reply.
From the description you've given then this would appear to be a catastrophic clutch plate failure. Usually before the clutch fails to this extent it starts to slip first but having said that if the friction material has just broken up then you wouldn't get any warning.
As there isn't any unusual noise I wouldn't think it was an internal transmission failure.
Clutch failures do seem a little common on this model especially if it has been converted to a motor home.
Unfortunately the only way to confirm this is to remove the gearbox and inspect the clutch lining.
I hope this helps but if you have further questions regarding this let me know and I'll reply as soon as I'm able to.
Best wishes,
Sean.
hi sean my vehicle is a van conversion ,an ih oregon r although it is 5yrs old it has only 26500 miles on the clock. i would not expect a clutch failure with this amount of miles, would fiat although out of warranty be willing to cover the cost
Hello again, you would need to speak to Fiat about any warranty, I would be surprised if they would contribute towards it though. I personally would expect a clutch to last longer than this mileage. I believe that the clutch material was changed in 2009 to try to eliminate concerns caused by slip when reversing. Due to the gear ratio of reverse if you need to reverse up an incline you need to slip the clutch more than usual and this was causing clutch judder and failure.
As I said at the beginning I would be surprised if Fiat will pay towards this but give them a try.
Let me know if I can assist further.
Best regards,
