hi i have a peugot 407 2liter HDI , the engine managment light came on with anti pollution system fault after filling up with diesel the fault would clear then come back within a few hundered miles , the car would suffer power loss most noticable when coming off a round about , twice the engine revs red lined for no reason the third time the engine red lined for 30 seconds the engine siezed , all 4 con rods bent and diesel in the sump , the engine is being re built , what caused this ? And what can be done to prevent this happening again ?

diesel engine 'run-away' is pretty scary and its usually caused by the engine running on something other than diesel, like its own engine oil

you can only stop it by either stalling the engine ( if its a manual gearbox) or stuffing rags into the intake to choke off its air supply

So I'd check over the condition of the turbocharger remove the high pressure intake hose after the turbo and have a feel of the turbine wheel - there should be no play radially at all - but a little bit of axial / end to end float is normal

also check inside the intake just after the turbo for any signs of oil as this would be an indication that the turbo oil seal is starting to fail and a replacement / rebuilt turbo may well be required.

I suspect the oil leak into the intake is also whats causing the anti-pollution light
