It could be an air leak, where there is any leak in the intake after the air mass meter the engine will pull in air and so lean out the engine casuing uneven running.

Check all the joints for tightness / hose condition / splits etc after the meter first then if this doesn't show any improvment then try:
The best way to find an air leak is to have the engine running and to spray lighter gas around each joint after the meter. As the lighter gas is fuel, if an air- leak is present the engine will pull it in along with the air and rev-up.

You may have to make up a bit of hose with a flattened piece of pipe in the end to give you a 'wand' to wave around the intake and get into the nooks and crannies but this method works very well
