Disconnect the appliance from the electrical supply first.
You need long nose pliers. (I know, you said you had tried narrow pliers but you haven't tried collapsing the bulb screw part).
Remove the glass so you only have the screw in metal part left.
Bend the metal so you can get hold of it.
Twist the pliers anti clockwise (as if you were unscrewing the bulb) so the metal part of the bulb starts collapsing on itself.
Keep winding it and eventually it will unscrew.
Don't worry about the state of the bulb metal part, it's for the bin anyway.
Once out, fit the new bulb.
Fit the glass and restore the power.
