Just getting a dark screen. It's turning on but it stays

just getting a dark screen. It's turning on but it stays dark. Volume may be broken too but not 100% sure on that since it won't display anything but a black screen. It does power on though.
JA: What's the make and model of your tv, and has turning it on been a problem in the past?
Customer: insignia ns-L42x-10a no problem turning on
JA: Does the TV menu work? Do you have the same problem on all sources/inputs?
Customer: idk. can't remember
JA: How long has this been an issue? What happened right before this popped up?
Customer: it's been doing this for about 2 months, but been shut off for that long since we can't watch tv. nothing happened before this. it just stopped working one day.
JA: Anything else you want the TV expert to know before I connect you?

the tv turns on but no actual back light. i have a multimeter and have used it for minor electrical work in the house like moving outlets and switches etc... I understand the difference between ac and dc. Very limited working knowledge though. Much better as an insurance salesman and carpenter. Ha!
