THIS SET IS KNOWN FOR BALLAST PROBLEMS CAUSED BY POWER SUPPLY CHECK TO SEE IF THE FILTER CAP ON THE BALLAST IS PUFFED . IF IT IS YOU MUST REPLACE THE POWER SUPPLY AND BALLAST . IF YOU REPLACE THE BALLAST ONLY YOU WILL BE BACK IN ABOUT TWO MONTHS. i NORMALLY REPLACE ALL THREE ,POWER SUPPLY ,BALLAST AND LAMP . IF YOU SEE THE LAMP PUFFED AT THE BASE (INSIDE) IT IS DAMAGED AND WILL NOT LAST LONG. IF THE POWER SUPPLY AND BALLAST IS REPLACED IT WILL FIX THE SET. (IF THE BALLAST CAP IS PUFFED AND I BET IT IS)
Its hard to tell you exactly but I will try my best...The ballast has two large size red wires that come out of a usually black component which is square or rectangular and located where the lamp plugs into the large red wire plugs of the ballast. When you locate it look a the capacitor and see if the top if it is pooched. A capacitor is a cylinder shaped component with a minus sign on one side.
The ballast board has aluminum metal (heat sinks) on it
The ballast board is usually about 6-7 inches long and 4 inches wide
Here is a picture of the ballast CLICK HERE
Here is a picture of the power supply CLICK HERE
Take a look at the picture of the ballast and at the bottom right corner is the capacitor round on top shiny round on top with the ink dot on it...See if it is puffed up ...it is suppose to be flat on top
You could rub your finger across the top...be sure the tv is unplugged of course
That's fine the ballast is still bad and the power supply too.
You can try a search on Ebay but be sure the numbers of the boards match. Begin your search with the model number on Ebay...HLT6176SX/XAA
