Do you lack sound on all inputs?You mentioned dvr and cable, are those actually 2 separate devices? Or a combined cable box/dvr? What about any other connection such as dvd, game, apps, etc (You may need to connect something else, temporarily, for testing purposes).
As an initial step though, please reboot the dvr/box by unplugging power to it for 60+ seconds, as a box fault is the most common cause of this issue.
