Hi and welcome to JustAnswer,

Thank you for the question and your patience. Should you still need assistance for information purposes only...

Initially, is there a cable box or satellite receiver used with the Samsung? If yes, post back with its model number and please describe how it is connected to the TV using what kind of cable(s).

Cable box Motorola DCT6412 III Cable HDMI

Proposed solution:

  • • turn on the Motorola and the Samsung;
  • • tune the Motorola to a channel with known Closed Caption feature;
  • • turn Off the Motorola only;
  • • quickly press the MENU button on the Motorola's front panel;
  • • use the remote's UP/DOWN to select CLOSED CAPTION;
  • • press the > to select ENABLED;
  • • press POWER or MENU.

Timing is critical.

Please post back results of above proposed approach.

Yes, that worked. But it would be a real pain to use. Not a good solution. How about the cc (caption control) button on the samsung remote?

The Samsung's built-in Closed Caption feature would only work if it is in TV mode; i.e. it is directly connected to an antenna or cable feed. In its current arrangement, the Samsung is in HDMI mode and the Motorola is the one directly connected to a cable feed. It is the Motorola then that receives the cable TV signals and hence CC could only be enabled within the Motorola.

I realize that the above may perhaps be not what was expected. It is unfortunately, a design limitation of which there is no workaround.
