Hi there happy to help,

Are the spots stationary and occurring on all inputs to the TV? DVD, cable, etc......?

Let me know,

OK here is what is going on.....

The DMD chip/board on your TV is failing.

This is the chip with the "tiny mirrors" invented by texas instruments a few years back that is the heart of the DLP light engine.

This is not good news as 9 times out of 10 it is cheaper to replace the TV than perform this repair.

Most people live with the problem until the TV becomes unwatchable and then replace.

Here's an example, a refurbished part alone is $400...........

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mitsubishi-WD65737-WD65C9-optical-engine-light-engine-part-938P158020-/150681897464

It usually runs about 3-400 to have it put in. Its not an easy do it yourself project. Considering the design life of this TV is 7-10 years, you are past middle age and unfortunately this repair is not financially feasible.

Not good news I'm sorry. Unfortunately we are seeing this more and more with the aging fleet of DLP TVs. Let me know if you need advise on a replacement TV.

Take care.

the tv was purchased on 8/28/09. is this the common problem for all DLP tvs? and if so, what kind of HDTV would not have this kind of costly problem?

Yes this is getting to be quite common with DLP TVs past the 3 year old mark.

In my professional opinion there is no better buy out there than the LG brand LCD TVs. LCD TVs do not have DLP chips. LG is a very good middle of the road price and we rarely see them here with issues.

You can get Vizios, Samsungs, Panasonics, cheaper, but we see them with various hardware issues on a daily basis.

Sony's are simply overpriced for the TV you get. We see them with issues here as well.

Take care.
