Customer Question

We have a mitsubishi dlp WD-65738 tv, the lamp went out, got a replacement and after I installed the new lamp the tv will turn on and I get picture for about 30-45 seconds before the picture starts to degrade/flicker and I can hear a turning high pitched sqealing sound then it shuts off and I get a red solid LED light on the front of the tv. I have tried reseating the lamp multiply times but that has not worked.

Can you tell us why you replaced the lamp? Did it pop, or burn out?
Thank you

We replaced it because the TV wouldn't turn on and we were getting a solid red LED on the tv. Checked the mitsubishi website and it told us that the lamp was probably burnt out if it wouldn't come back on after trying to reseat the lamp.

Hi Brian,

That sounds like the ballast is in need of replacement.
Its the circuit board that drives the lamp.
The symptoms really suggest that.
Its not very expensive and easy to replace as well.
You can get a new one from either:

Replaced the ballast and it did not solve the issue. After replacing the ballast I put the original lamp back in and I would get sound but no picture, so I put the new lamp in and I would get sound and picture but after 30-45 sec the picture starts to degrade/flicker and then it shuts off.

Hi, usually that is the cause, especially because of the sound you are getting.
It sounds like either the new ballast is bad, or the color wheel needs to be replaced.
But I can tell you, usually in this case I find the ballast to be at fault.
In this case, I would think that the voltage from the power supply going to the ballast is the problem. Its got to be ballast related.
I will be here for you if you have further questions, we will get it solved one way or another:-)
